Disease Prevention and Risk Reduction

A 2009 review published in Nutrition Reviews cited studies showing that oats reduce total plasma cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, both risk factors of heart disease.

The beta-glucans and avenanthramides exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects.

Important Points

Oats can be purchased as “steel-cut,” “rolled,” or “instant.” Steel-cut oats are the least processed, having simply been cut into two or three pieces, whereas rolled oats have been flattened and steamed or toasted lightly.
